Serving Those Who Serve & Protect

November 17, 2016

Green Bay, Allouez, Ashwaubenon, DePere, and the surrounding Brown County communities are blessed to be served and protected by many dedicated Law Enforcement Officers.  Their jobs, while certainly vital, noble, and willingly undertaken, take precious time from their families.

Carrie Zehms, of From Above Gathering Place & Bakery, is inviting You to help out in showing appreciation to our Police Officers:

"With all the violence directed at police officers lately, let’s show our support to them and their families. Let's make a meal for the police families along with homemade thank you cards."

Carrie will need volunteers in organizing and making the meals, and also monetary donations to make this work.  And, that's where our members and readers come in!

"We really need your time, talent and treasures, and we're praying that many of you will step up to help out!"

To Volunteer or make a donation for this project, Please email [email protected] or call 920-494-3253 by Wednesday November 30th, 2016.

Carrie Zehms Receives Community Impact Award!

October 18, 2016

We are thrilled that our friend and network member, Carrie Zehms - of From Above Gathering Place & Bakery - has been honored with the E-Hub Community Impact Award!

Here's the news in Carrie's own words:

On Thursday night (Oct 13th) I had the honor of meeting Sara White (She and her husband Reggie started Urban Hope to help people own their own businesses). That same night, Mark Burwell and David Cuene presented me with the Community Impact Award. Without the help of family, friends, generous donors and most of all God, "From Above" would not have come to light. Thank you!"

We at the Green Bay News Network have had the honor and pleasure of being associated with Carrie Zehms & "From Above" since just before they opened their doors. We're so proud of Carrie & Shawn Zehms, their family, and their entire wonderful team at From Above.  This award is truly a well-deserved recognition!

Volunteers Needed!

September 28, 2016

Our good friend, Carrie Zehms, of From Above Gathering Place and Bakery, could use some help:

We are in need of some volunteers in a couple of different areas. Thursday nights, we have Farmers market in the Green Bay Plaza parking lot, we are in need of some people to help at our booth. This Thursday especially between 2:45pm and 5:30pm.

Did God give you the wonderful gift of art?

Would you like to use your gift to help do some artwork on a wall, and on our large front windows? I need someone to paint a "Blessing Tree" on one of the walls in our bakery sitting area. The "Blessing Tree" will have all the names of our generous donors on it.

Do you like planning events?

We are in need of an "Event Planner." There are so many events that need to be planned. Our beautiful faith gives us so many feast days, and just days to celebrate life. Do you have the desire to help others celebrate and learn more about our beautiful faith?

If you or anyone you know would be interested in any of these opportunities, please give Carrie Zehms a call at 920-494-3253, or send her an email.

Meet Carrie Zehms

January 21, 2016

This morning, we had the opportunity to sit down with Carrie Zehms, founder and proprietor of the From Above Youth Center & Bakery.  While we enjoyed some coffee, and the sights and sounds of a busy bakery, we learned some things that we'll share with you now:

The idea for "From Above" developed sometime in 2013, and became a tangible reality with its opening in February of 2015.

We asked Carrie, "Why a Bakery and Youth Center?"

"With 8 children, as they grew through various stages, we -- Shawn and I -- realized there weren't a lot of safe, moral places, where they could be supported in their Catholic Faith, and grow into good, faithful, Christian adults.

God gave me gifts for baking, and for teaching children.  The bakery is established as a means of providing support for the youth center, and also to provide a positive work experience; so young people can learn and prepare for future roles in the working world."

We were curious as to what Carrie likes best about her venture:

"Meeting people, and seeing the face of Christ in the everyday people who come through the door.  Also, it's great to see the youth; smiling as they learn, and as they experience God's love.  I can't quite explain the joy that comes from celebrating our Catholic Faith with the individuals and families who participate in our programs and activities."

Lastly, we asked Carrie what message she might have for our members and readers:

"While From Above is founded on Faith and Prayer, it takes good old fashioned money to keep the doors open, the lights on, and the kitchen stocked.  By supporting us, and donating, you are changing lives of young people - and investing in their future, and in our future as a community - and as a society.

Your financial gift helps children to find their God-given gifts; and to use them for the good of us all -- now, and in the future.

We pray daily for those who live and work in the Green Bay area, and we're trusting God to touch the hearts of those who are in a position to help us continue this very worthwhile and loving enterprise.

One Step in the Right Direction

November 27, 2015

There's a great song by Harold Payne that we don't hear much anymore. It's called "One Step."

...If I take one step in the right direction,
If I touch one heart along the way,
and if that one step becomes a chain reaction,
then my journey has not been in vain.

From Above Youth Center & Bakery is definitely a "step in the right direction," and they can benefit greatly from your help in touching more hearts along the way.

The Christmas Shoppping Season is now officially upon us.  Perhaps, in the midst of looking for "just the right gifts" for our family members, friends, and neighbors, we could pick up one more item - maybe something on the From Above "Wish List."  If you'd prefer to make a cash donation, you'll find a quick and easy giving link, as well as a printable In-Kind Donation Form for your tax records on that same "Our Needs" page.

There's one more thing we almost forgot to tell you:  From Above Youth Center & Bakery provides some of the tastiest treats in Green Bay.  Looking for great Christmas gifts for your customers?  The bakery can bake custom cookies, with your company's logo baked right into the cookie.

Cookie Makers Unite To Meet Huge Demand!

July 21, 2015

Earlier in the week, we received a plea for volunteer help from Carrie Zehms at From Above Youth Center & Bakery:

From Above Youth Center and Bakery has a large order for Wednesday and is looking for some helpers.

We have to make 42 dz (yes that is 504 cookies) for Relevant Radio’s anniversary at the Shrine (of Our Lady of Good Help).

Well, the word got out, and Carrie was able to fill the order to the great satisfaction and delight of the folks at Relevant Radio.

The Moral of the Story?  It's two-fold:

1 - Never be hesitant to put the word out when you need help.  The Green Bay area is full of generous folks who are willing to lend a hand.

2 - When you're in need of Delicious Baked Treats for even a very large event, Call Carrie Zehms at From Above Youth Center & Bakery!

The best part is, that while you find that "special something," you are also helping a very worthy cause: All of the proceeds will help to support the Youth Center.

The Youth Center will serve middle school and high school students in the Green Bay and surrounding area. Plans call for a full time youth minister, along with a team of high school leaders – mentoring the middle school youth, and College Students/Young Adults mentoring the High School Youth.

From Above: Sandwiches, Panini, and a Rummage Sale!

May 28, 2015

This is hot off the press -- the Panini Press, that is!

We spoke by phone with Carrie Zehms, of From Above Youth Center & Bakery, this afternoon.  Carrie let us in on some breaking news -- or is it "baking news?"

"We're having a huge Rummage Sale, with lots of great items, on Saturday, June 27th, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, right here at From Above."

That's not all though!  We already knew that From Above offers baked treats; cookies, bars, etc, all made fresh daily, and great coffee besides.  But we didn't know this:

"We just began selling Panini (an Italian favorite) and other Sandwiches; made with bread from Great Harvest Bread Company.  We're offering a selection of Cold Meats & Cheeses from which customers may choose.  We also have a Lunch Combo Special: A Sandwich or Panini, Chips, Pickle, and a Homemade Cookie, all for only $10.00.  We also have coffee and soda available for purchase."

The baked treats, panini, sandwiches, and the Lunch Combo will all be available at the Rummage Sale on June 27th. as well!

Perhaps the best part, other than the wonderful baked treats, panini, etc., is the fact that all of the proceeds from the bakery go toward the operation of the Youth Center.

The Youth Center will serve middle school and high school students in the Green Bay and surrounding area. Plans call for a full time youth minister, along with a team of high school leaders – mentoring the middle school youth, and College Students/Young Adults mentoring the High School Youth.

May 20, 2015

We are delighted to welcome Carrie Zehms, and the From Above Youth Center & Bakery to the Green Bay News Network.

The Mission of From Above is to “Foster a safe, Catholic environment, in which middle school and high school students may learn, enjoy, and enhance their Catholic Faith, and, in general, deepen their dependence upon God in accordance with the Teaching of the Catholic Church.”

From Above is a nonprofit organization. Most of its income will come from grants, and from generous donors. The Bakery will also provide financial support to the Youth Center.

The Youth Center will serve middle school and high school students in the Green Bay and surrounding area. Plans call for a full time youth minister, along with a team of high school leaders – mentoring the middle school youth, and College Students/Young Adults mentoring the High School Youth.

When we visited with Carrie this past Tuesday morning, we had the opportunity to meet her 5 year old son, Liam, who was very eager to provide a tour of the youth center – including an up-close inspection of the recent paint job provided by Sherwin Williams (along with painting muscle from their employees, and from other volunteers). Liam explained that his “official title” is Taste Tester. Apparently, it's not “From Above Bakery,” until Liam gives the “thumbs up.”
