How Do You Know If You Have Hearing Loss?

September 20, 2018

If you’re concerned you or a loved one may be experiencing hearing loss, you are not alone. Because hearing loss can come on gradually, it’s often the people around you who notice your hearing problems before you do.

Typically, it takes people an average of seven years to seek treatment. If you exhibit the following symptoms, consider visiting an audiologist:

You hear mumbling when people are speaking to you.

You have to ask people to repeat what they said.

You laugh at jokes even though you may not have heard the details.

You frequently complain that people mumble.

You need to ask others about the details of a meeting you just attended.

You play the TV or radio louder than your friends, spouse or relatives.

You cannot hear the doorbell or the telephone.

You find that looking at people when they speak to you makes it easier to understand.

You miss environmental sounds, such as birds chirping or leaves blowing.

You find yourself avoiding certain restaurants because they are too noisy.

You hear a ringing sound in your ears, especially when it is quiet.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, give Carpenter Ear and Hearing a call to set up an appointment.

Hearing Aids Offer Solutions to a Wide Range of Wearers

September 6, 2018

Basic digital hearing aids generally require the wearer to make some manual adjustments in certain listening environments such as turning a volume control up or down, or pushing a button to change listening programs.

In contrast, a premium or more advanced hearing aid responds automatically to changes in the listener's environment, making changes based on the signals being detected by the hearing aid. The hearing aid wearer is not required to make any manual changes. As the level of the technology increases in hearing aids, so do the availability of advanced features.

Styles Of Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are available in many different sizes and styles thanks to advancements in digital technology and miniaturization of the internal components. Many of today's hearing aids are considered sleek, compact, and innovative - offering solutions to a wide range of hearing aid wearers.

Various Hearing Aid Styles We Offer:
In-The-Ear
Invisible in-the-Canal (IIC)
Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)
In-the-Canal (ITC)...

Hearing Loss in Pre-Born Infants

August 16, 2018

Compared to full-term children, there is an increased incidence of hearing loss and visual impairment among moderately- and late-preterm infants, according to a study published online July 17 in Pediatrics.

Mikko Hirvonen, M.D., from the Central Finland Health Care District in Jyväskylä, and colleagues compared the incidences of sensory impairments among very-preterm (VP; <32 + 0/7 weeks), moderately-preterm (MP; 32 + 0/7 to 33 + 6/7 weeks), late-preterm (LP; 34 + 0/7 to 36 + 6/7 weeks), and term infants (≥37 weeks) using data from a national registry (1,018,256 infants).

The researchers found that the incidences of sensory impairments decreased with advancing gestational age at birth (P < 0.001). Intracranial hemorrhage and convulsions were associated with increased risks of hearing loss and visual impairment. There was an increased risk of hearing loss with VP (odds ratio [OR], 2.34) and LP (OR, 1.26) births, as well as an increased risk of visual impairment with VP (OR, 1.94), MP (OR, 1.42), and LP (OR, 1.31) births.

"MP and LP groups constitute the majority of all prematurely born children, and impairments among these groups constitute a major burden to society and the health care system," the authors write.

Hearing Loss In Children

May 31, 2018

What Are The Signs?

Hearing loss in children can occur at any time in life from other acquired factors such as ear infections, head trauma, certain medications, and genetic factors.

You may suspect your child has a hearing loss if you observe any of the following:

Failed newborn hearing screening

Delays in speech and language acquisition, including baby babbling

Frequent ear infections

Not startling to loud sounds

Not turning to the location of sounds after six months of age

Difficulty following verbal directions

Daydreaming in many situations

Concerns by school teachers or failed school hearing screening

Loud volume on the TV or radio

Complaints from the child that they cannot hear

A pediatric audiologist is trained to test children of all ages.

Any symptom of hearing loss in children should be addressed promptly so that speech, language and academic development are not delayed or impacted.

May 24, 2018

The Green Bay News Network is proud to Welcome our newest Member, Carpenter Ear & Hearing Center!

We asked Larry Carpenter, Clinical Audiologist, to share a bit about himself and his practice:

After graduating with a Master of Science degree from the University of WI-Oshkosh in January, 1985, I began my adventures in Audiology in Des Moines, IA. I worked in medical, clinical, hospital and educational settings for the next 22 years.

I have been living and working in Green Bay for the past 28 years.

Carpenter Ear and Hearing SC began in August, 2007. Being in my own business has been very enjoyable. I owe much of this enjoyment to the patients that I see and work with on a daily basis.

My professional interests are in hearing loss, hearing aids, balance and dizziness disorders, and ear protection. With the knowledge I have gained throughout the years I hope to provide people with a pleasant experience in a caring atmosphere at a very reasonable cost. I also try to have some fun while helping people improve their lives!
