ANITA DESTICHE Named Client of the Month

November 9, 2017

Pro Fitness is excited to put the spotlight on Anita Destiche this month!

After thinking about personal training for 25 years, Anita decided she was ready to become stronger and more physically fit.

She hoped this would allow her to spend more time dancing and eliminate the need for medication. "I'd also like to look nice for pictures at my Granddaughter's wedding."

It's been 16 months since Anita began training with Lisa and people are noticing.

"I'm getting compliments, which builds my self esteem, buying new clothes, and I have more energy." Personal training keeps Anita disciplined and committed to working toward her fitness goals. "You have to trust the trainer's knowledge and respect their decisions. Because of the healthy changes I've made, both my personal and public life are better organized!"

Going forward, Anita would like to lose more weight and be physically active at least 30 minutes a day.

"I'd like to lose another 80 pounds and maybe run or walk a marathon."

"Without a trainer, you get no-where on your own. Trainers are not just training! They listen, encourage, praise, mentally stimulate you, befriend you, and set a good will example."

GARY AMBROSIUS ~ September Client of the Month

September 7, 2017

Pro Fitness is excited to put the spotlight on Gary Ambrosius this month!

Gary started training at Pro Fitness about a year and half ago. His initial goals were to improve balance, flexibility, mobility, and most important, because of Asthma, Gary wanted to increase his lung capacity.

Gary’s asthma is improving, his balance is getting much better, and he feels a lot better overall. Amazing accomplishments considering how much his life changed 23 years ago. Gary’s inspiring story, in his own words:

“My fitness journey began on an icy morning, December 9th, 1994. I was struck by a truck while attempting to assist people in a van that had rolled over. I endured a broken right hip, broken left leg, broken ribs, ruptured spleen, and had multiple fractures. I was confined to a wheel chair until my broken bones healed enough to put weight on them. Dr. Grace stated if I do it right, he would get me walking again. Dr. Grace referred me to the CP Center for treatment in their aquatic pool. The staff at the CP Center was terrific and did a great job in getting my mobility and getting me back walking again.

After I completed my therapy, I did not want to lose mobility, so the staff at the CP Center referred me to the YMCA. It was there during a class that I noticed a group of runners on the track above. They invited me to join them and my running took off from there. It was after I started running that I was diagnosed with Asthma. Just another obstacle to overcome in my fitness journey.

I continued taking classes at the Y and some time ago, I took a class that Chrystal was leading. After class we got talking and she invited me to stop over at Pro Fitness and try one of her classes there. After some thought, I decided to take her up on the offer. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Her first class was kind of tough but I survived. The people I have met and friendships I made have made Pro Fitness a dynamic place to work out. I have also done personal training at Pro Fitness and will be signing up for additional personal training sessions this fall and winter. The staff is great and has been so helpful in keeping me motivated.

I would like to thank the staff at Pro Fitness for all their help in keeping me on track and everyone will know I am there when you all hear Chrystal proclaim “Breathe Gary”. Thank you so much for all Pro Fitness has done in keeping me focused and on track to reach my health fitness goals.”

Low Carb & Delicious

July 13, 2017

A Delicious Night at a'Bravo!

Pro Fitness sponsored an evening of Delicious, healthy food and special friends at a'Bravo last month.

Julie & the staff of a'Bravo created & served an awesome sampling of their new low-carb menu. Julie also shared a personal, heartfelt testimony to the benefits of clean eating, and Dr. Dan Koster shared his medical expertise on the lifestyle. Bravo!

Now that you know where to go for a low carb night out, how about a yummy low carb dessert recipe you can make at home?  Pro Fitness client, Erin D., tested this one and gave it two thumbs up:

No Bake Paleo Strawberry "Cheesecake"

Crust:
1 c. Almonds
12 Pitted Medjool dates

Filling:
2 c. Cashews, soaked in water overnight
1/3 c. Honey
5 Tbs. Lemon juice
1/2 c. Coconut oil, melted
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
1 c. Strawberries

Optional:
Melted chocolate to drizzle on top

1. Place the dates in a bowl of water and soak for 10 minutes. Rinse and set aside.

2. To make crust, prepare a 9-inch springform pan with coconut oil spray. Place the almonds into a food processor and pulse until finely ground. Add the dates and blend until combined. Press the mixture evenly in the bottom of the pan, slightly going up the sides. Place in the freezer to chill.

3. To make the filling, drain & rinse the cashews. Place cashews, coconut oil, lemon juice, honey and vanilla extract into food processor and blend until it reaches a smooth, batter-like consistency. Add the cup of strawberries and blend until smooth.

4. Pour the strawberry filling on top of chilled crust. Place in the freezer for at least two hours to harden.

5. If desired, drizzle melted chocolate on top before serving.

There is no time like the present to take control of your own health!

Proper Training for Distance Running

May 11, 2017

In an article that recently appeared in the Green Bay Press-Gazette, there were several great quotes on the subject of distance running.  We found these particularly interesting and insightful:

John Bingham, author of “No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of Running,” wrote: “The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.”

Then there’s this thought, whose origins are too trampled to trace: “Races are run with the legs. Marathons are run with the heart.”

The article also included advice and suggestions from several area health and fitness professionals; especially a timely topic given the Bellin Run is coming up on June 10th.

Read the entire Press-Gazette article by clicking here.

We asked Doug Van Iten, of Pro Fitness to add his thoughts to those expressed in the article:

"Very good article! The comments from Mike, Nick, and Colin were spot on. Runners definitely want strong glutes to push them down the road, strong Quads to absorb the impact of the forces on each leg, stability in the hip muscles to keep everything in alignment below the hips, and cross training to avoid overuse injuries."

Doug said that he would focus on 3 specific things: Rest, Nutrition, and Supportive Staff.

Rest: Injuries can manifest from a number of causes, weak muscles, imbalanced muscles, and also improper footwear selection. Having these 3 experts to guide you on preventative measures is vital to an enjoyable running event.

I would recommend that rest time in between your training runs is also critical for a reduced injury rate. If you place the body, and its connective structures under unusual stress (running 10, 15, 20 miles for training), then plan for some rest time in between.

Because everyone is different (ie. Body weight, muscle mass, speed, distance running, other physical stress related to your profession, etc.) it makes it difficult to apply an appropriate rest time in between your training runs.

Common overuse indicators would be: 1. Runners Knee - pain over the kneecap; 2. IT Band Syndrome - pain on the outside of the leg from the hip to the knee; 3. Shin splints - pain in the front part of the lower leg; 4. Muscle tears - excessively sore muscles that do not seem to heal within 2 days; and 5. Stress Fractures - a bone injury that requires no running at all to heal.

If you have experienced any of these conditions recently, then consider decreasing your training load, or increase your days off in between the training runs.

Nutrition: My personal "go to" nutrient for the marathon training is the increase in Omega-3 Fatty Acids. I use a dose of 8 to 10 grams of Fish Oil supplements for the two weeks leading up to a marathon.I also eat salmon and vegetables for 2 to 3 meals the week of the marathon.

Basically I eat as much anti-inflammatory foods as I can the week preceding the running event. I want to "pre-load" my body with good anti-inflammatory nutrients in preparation for the "pro-inflammatory" running event.

Then, after the event, you will be able to go home and do all your chores with minimal soreness, and everyone is happy!

Supportive Staff: I would highly encourage you to surround yourself with a group of professionals that will assist in your running goals.

Mike, Nick, and Colin are great people to start with in case an issue comes up that warrants their input.

I also would include a Personal Trainer to coordinate your program, a Massage Therapist for the recovery during your training, a Registered Dietician for the nutritional support.

And don't forget your running buddies, and your family that will be there at the finish line celebrating your accomplishment with you! They are Golden!

Meet Jason Manders, of Pro Fitness

March 2, 2017

This week, Doug Van Iten, Owner of Pro Fitness, would like us to meet Jason Manders, a Personal Trainer with more than 15 years experience.

We asked Jason to tell us a little about himself and his profession.

I currently work at ProFitness in Green Bay, Wisconsin which is owned by Doug Van Iten who opened ProFitness in 1997. As a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, I am proficient in administering cardiovascular and muscular strengthening. A growing passion of mine in the industry is utilizing my skills in corrective exercise and functional movement screening to assess potential musculoskeletal limitations in clients and provide them with exercises that will address their individual fitness needs.

As to "Why" Jason chose this professional field, he had this to offer:

I was an active child who turned into an active adult. I chose this career out of my passion for exercise. What’s unique to me is my passion for corrective exercise, which stems from injuries I’ve sustained. It’s all about knowing how things work together and know why when they don’t. I like to teach people about muscles and why they work and why they may not work.

I know it sounds clichéd, but I like working with people. I’ll go one step further; I like to educate people. Similar to what I've already said, I chose to learn from my injuries. Other people may experience the same injury. I like to share my knowledge and experiences to give empathy and explain why things happen. I strive to earn trust. I work to develop relationships. I over-deliver on service. I let fitness sell itself, because you can’t put a price on your health.

On a more personal note, Jason added this:

My wife and I’ve been married for over eight years. After the loss of one of our daughters (Raina) to cancer in 2016; our six-year-old daughter Elianna wanted to earn money to purchase a single American Girl Doll and give it to a cancer survivor. She began painting rainbows on one side of small rocks while my wife attached magnets to the other side. They were called Raina’s-Rainbow-Rocks and were available to be purchased with any donation amount. On February twenty-fifth, Raina’s first birthday, my family delivered six American Girl Dolls to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Four additional dolls were delivered to St. Vincent hospital in Green Bay just before this past Christmas.

When Jason isn't at work, he likes to strength train primarily in his basement gym -- referring to himself as a "Gym Rat", so he can be close to his family. He also enjoys playing guitar and singing.

6 Things You Can Do to Reverse or Prevent Type II Diabetes

February 16, 2017

I am fortunate, you are fortunate, we are fortunate. This is an era of massive information sharing and human disease understanding. Having access to the world’s database of medical research has allowed me to educate and guide our clients to a better state of health.

I read every day about diet, nutrition, and disease conditions like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke, etc. We are getting better at understanding these conditions; how our environment affects their expression and progression, and how our everyday behaviors can have an impact on those diseases.

Today I would like to share with you the 6 health behaviors that Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, M.D.(one of the UK's leading functional medicine authorities) used to REVERSE Type II Diabetes in one of his patients; and by the way, it only took 6 weeks!

1.  Diet – Low carbohydrate diet, no processed foods.

2.  Stress Management – Reduces cortisol levels, because cortisol raises blood sugar

3.  Get 7 to 8 hours of Sleep every day – lack of adequate sleep contributes to diabetes development

4.  Exercise - Move every day for 45 minutes, and keep muscles strong with resistance training

5.  Probiotics – Having a healthy microbiome has been associated with a reduced risk for diabetes

6. Get some Sunshine – Researchers speculate that vitamin D could reduce the diabetes risk by 25%

There you have it. I, you, and we have the ability to take these steps and adopt these behaviors into our daily lives. I like being in charge of my health, join me!  ~Doug Van Iten

You Can Delay Cognitive Decline

February 2, 2017

This week, Doug Van Iten, of Pro Fitness, shares with us some interesting excerpts from the article "Intensive Exercise May Delay Cognitive Decline by 10 Years," by Sue Hughes - a journalist on Medscape Neurology who has a particular interest in stroke and multiple sclerosis.

------

Two new analyses from a study in a diverse racial US population have added to evidence that good cardiovascular health and physical exercise can slow cognitive decline in later years.

For the two new analyses, published as two separate papers, researchers from the University of Miami, Florida, and Columbia University, New York, re-examined the data on various risk factors and how they relate to later cognitive function.

In the study of physical activity, published online in Neurology on March 23, individuals who reported low levels of leisure time physical activity in their mid-60s showed greater cognitive decline when assessed several years later compared with those who exercised to a moderate or intense level. The difference in cognitive decline between the two groups was equal to 10 years of aging.

"Our results suggest that for older people, getting regular quite intensive exercise may help them keep their cognitive abilities longer," senior author, Clinton B. Wright, MD, University of Miami, commented to Medscape Medical News.

He emphasized that they showed a difference between intensive exercise, such as running or swimming, and low-level activity such as walking. "To be included in the moderate to intensive group, individuals had to exert themselves — ie, undergo a form of activity that raised their heart rate for more than just a few minutes several times a week."

He noted that similar findings have been reported before but mostly in mainly white populations. "Our study involved a cohort from Manhattan, which is a real melting pot in terms of race and ethnicity. It is reassuring that we have now found supporting evidence for a positive effect of exercise on later cognitive health in such a diverse population."

------

Doug looks forward to helping you put together and execute a sensible and appropriate exercise program. Give him a call or stop in, and take those first steps toward a happier, healthier lifestyle."

Successful Strategies for Weight Loss

January 19, 2017

This week, Doug Van Iten, of Pro Fitness, would like to pass along some helpful information on successful strategies for healthy weight loss.*

Keep your food simple: Studies have shown that eating simpler food leads to eating less, which in turn helps you shed pounds without effort.

Be sure to eat enough:  No matter what program you choose, dieting should never be about starving yourself. Calories do count, but when it comes to weight loss, undereating is just as problematic as overeating.

Eat enough carbs to support your activity level:  Match your carbohydrate intake to the amount of exercise you do. Not only can a mismatch stall your weight loss, but it can lead to instances of fatigue and muscle breakdown if you’re over-exercising and not eating enough carbohydrate to match your activity level.

Move throughout the day:  Getting into the habit of moving throughout the day can not only benefit your weight and promote fat loss, but it can also improve your overall health and reduce your risk for chronic disease.

Address your whole life, not just diet and exercise:  Did you know that there’s a lot more to losing weight and keeping it off than just diet and exercise? For example, sleep deprivation makes us hungrier, and high levels of stress hormones cause us to eat more and store more fat, in turn reducing our ability to lose weight and keep it off. Studies also show that those with social support, a better ability to handle stress and self-efficacy, and those who assume responsibility in life are more likely to keep weight off once they lose it.

Keeping Healthy Over the Holidays

December 15, 2016

For many of us, the "Christmas Break" is something from which we spend a good portion of the new year recovering. We eat differently, we eat a bit more than we know we "should," and by mid-January we have added weight and reduced stamina to show for it.

Doug Van Iten, of Pro Fitness, recommends a Fasting Diet as a means of "keeping things in check" while we enjoy the food and fun of the holiday season.

Simply "fasting" one or two days per week - during which men keep their calorie intake to 600 or less, and women hold to 500 or less, can make a huge positive difference in our health.  Doug offers several menu ideas for these "Fasting Diets," and here's just a sample:

"Fast 600 for Men"

Dinner: Roast Pork: 4.5 oz of sliced, lean Roast Pork (289 calories), 1 tablespoon defatted pan juices (60 calories), 1/2 Cup steamed Cauliflower florets (17 calories), 1/3 Cup steamed, chopped Broccoli (17 calories) Total Calories: 383

"Fast 500 for Women"

Dinner: Oven Baked Tilapia: 7-8oz Tilapia fillet, sprinkled with your favorite dried herbs/ground spices (202 calories), Large Poached Egg (90 calories), 2/3 Cup lightly steamed broccoli florets (33 calories) Total Calories: 325

Keep in mind that building up muscle is an excellent and healthful way to burn fat.  Give Doug a call, and plan now to have a Happy & Healthy holiday season!

We All Know We "Should"...

December 1, 2016

Exercise!

And, with the New Year approaching, perhaps some of us will make exercise part of our resolutions.

Though we know we "should" exercise, we may not realize that exercise is possibly the single, most important thing we can do for our good health.

"Regular movement not only lowers the risk of developing or dying from heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, it also prevents certain cancers, improves mood, builds bones, strengthens muscles, expands lung capacity, reduces the risk of falls and fractures, and helps to keep excess weight in check. And those are just some of the more familiar effects."

                                     - Scientific American, August 2013

Doug Van Iten, of Pro Fitness, mentioned to us that in his research he has learned of some amazing health benefits to regular exercise.

Exercise can help our nervous systems, and improve cognitive function, help to protect against inflammation, decrease fatigue and increase muscle efficiency, improve our bodies' response to insulin and help decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Doug looks forward to helping you to make and keep sensible exercise resolutions for the coming year. Give him a call or stop in, and take those first steps toward a "Happy New You!"

Fasting Diet for Brain Health

November 17, 2016

Doug Van Iten, of Pro Fitness, is an avid reader on health topics and how a reasonable approach to diet and exercise can help us live a long and happy life. Doug recently shared an article with us from the Johns Hopkins University magazine, which discussed protecting your brain from diseases such as Alzheimer's through what is known as a Fasting Diet:

Sticking to an intermittent crash diet, with no more than 500 calories two days per week, primes the brain for protection... Studies show that keeping calories at around that level stimulates two messaging chemicals that operate at the cellular level and are key to the growth of brain cells in animals and humans...

The shock of fasting leads the brain to create new cells. As neurons are coaxed to grow, the brain becomes more resistant to the effects of protein plaques that underlie cases of Alzheimer's, or the damage inflicted by Parkinson's.

(To Read the Entire Article, Click the link below this story, entitled "Don't Feed Your Head.")

To help his clients, Doug also provides some suggested menus to help make it easy to try a Fasting Diet. Following a fasting diet can, in and of itself, improve the health of your brain long term. You can gain even more benefit when you combine the diet with a realistic and formal exercise routine.

Doug Van Iten has been helping his clients enjoy a happy and healthy life for over 16 years. Doug's sensible supportive, and personal approach to developing a healthy lifestyle is why so many of his clients achieve their short-term and long-term individual goals.

Each day Doug is impressed by the commitment and effort of Pro Fitness clients. He is thankful. He is fortunate. He is humbled.

His special areas of interest include: Multi-sport training, Cancer and Exercise Training, Low Back Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition and Weight Management, Swimming, Biking, and Running.

Doug’s Fitness Philosophy: “Each day make a small change in your behavior to move closer to your goal, and then reach a little higher!"

"People in their 40s and 50s are seeing their parents grow older and become reliant on multiple prescriptions to deal with the effects of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. We are living longer lives than ever, but the quality of life in our older years isn't necessarily the way people envisioned when they were in their 40s and 50s. Pro Fitness develops programs for men and women who are in their 30s, 40s and 50s, which include healthy eating, an appropriate level of exercise, and education to get them on their path to a long, happy, and healthy life."

We're sure you'll find the Pro Fitness staff available and friendly, and the atmosphere fun and exciting!

Welcome Pro Fitness to the Green Bay News Network!

October 27, 2016

Please join us in welcoming Doug Van Iten & Pro Fitness to the Green Bay News Network!

And, this is the Perfect Time to think about getting in shape...Before the Holidays!  Many people wait until after the holidays to try and melt off the pounds they gained while celebrating.

Personal Fitness Training from Pro Fitness can help you avoid the pitfalls of eating too much over the holidays, and get you into a routine that will help you feel good all year long!

Doug points out that Personal Fitness Training provides the proper guidance and motivation to achieve a higher level of fitness.

"The best value of having a personal trainer is the encouragement to challenge your body, your mind, and your spirit to achieve YOUR fitness goal.We can help you design and plan the process of change to make your goals a reality!

The key benefit of having a Personal Trainer may be the relationship you develop with the trainer. We would like to establish open communication regarding your current health profile, and develop a plan of action to make changes. This relationship must be built on trust and confidence that each of us will give 100% effort."

Some people sign up for personal training to lose weight, gain strength, prepare for a sporting event (ie. Bellin Run), or just to get rid of the minor aches and pains of getting older.

"While your reason may be different, our commitment to you is the same. Our one-on-one appointment ensures 100% of our attention and 100% of your effort. We look forward to every workout with you and celebrating the victories along the way!

At Pro Fitness you can exercise in their training room, enjoy a walk ontheir treadmills, join a spin or a fitness interval class, and relax in the dry and wet sauna in each locker room. We're sure you'll find the Pro Fitness staff available and friendly, and the atmosphere fun and exciting!
