Travel Insurance ~ Is It Really Worth It?

October 13, 2016

This week, Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, gives us some advice to consider when deciding about Travel Insurance.

It is our policy to offer travel insurance for every travel purchase that is made in our office. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me whether travel insurance is worth it or not, I would be rich!

Today I am going to share with you experiences from my clients who have had to use their travel insurance or did not have to use it but could have.

Trip cancellation – A client booked their Alaska Tour and Cruise 6 months in advance. Two days before they were to leave for Alaska, his elderly mother had a heart attack and was hospitalized. Because they had the travel insurance, they were able to make the best decision for them and not be worried about losing their money. In the end, they still went to Alaska asMom was stable and insisted they still go. Their insurance would have covered them if they would have had to interrupt their trip. Happily, she recovered and is fine today.

Trip Interruption – Flights often get delayed, and it is upsetting when you miss your connection. Last year a couple were on their way to Italy, where they were joining an escorted tour. They missed their international flight and did not arrive into Rome until the following day; after their group had already left and were on to their way. I was able to secure a driver for them upon their arrival into Rome, who drove them to meet up with their group. The travel insurance paid for their driver and reimbursed them for the missed day of their trip.

Medical Expenses – Most health insurance plans will not cover medical expenses out of network which usually is out of the country. A colleagues' client had the misfortune to experience a stroke while sailing on a Baltic Cruise. She was airlifted off to a hospital and then transferred to another hospital. Her insurance covered all of the expenses, but more importantly orchestrated the whole process. Her husband was eternally grateful that he was able to just concentrate on helping her recover while the insurance company dealt with all of the details.

Those are just a few examples to consider the next time you are asked if you wish to purchase the travel insurance. I would be happy to help you understand the coverage to assist you in making the right decision for you.

Vacation in Sicily!

September 22, 2016

This week's article highlights the island of Sicily. It's a very interesting and diverse island with some very fun, colorful people.

Enjoy! - Anne Kulhanek, Premier Travel

Sicily is a mountainous island dotted with lemon, orange, almond and pistachio orchards separated from the mainland of Italy by the Strait of Messina.

Sicily can be roughly divided into the north-shore and south-shore areas. The north shore has reefs, olive groves, secluded coves and countless seaside resorts, including Cefalu, a gorgeous Arab-Norman city with good beaches.

The southern coast has a milder climate, so there's swimming most of the year (although it can get cold there November-March).

Among the areas not to be missed are Agrigento, Acireale and Taormina, a distinctive, beautiful town perched on cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean.

Hungry? Be sure to try steaming plate of seafood couscous at Osteria La Bettolaccia in Trapani; melt-in-your-mouth cannoli at Pasticceria Cappello in Palermo; street food in the rustic Vucciria or Ballero markets in Palermo; irresistible stuffed "arancini" rice balls at Antica Rosticceria da Cristina in Taormina; a surprising meal at a little family-run restaurant or trattoria no one knows about yet.

Everyone falls in love with Italy and wants to return again and again. Thankfully there are a wide variety of regions to explore when in Italy with each having its own personality and charms.

Call Anne today, to start planning your Italy exploration.

Rio de Janeiro ~ one of South America's gems

August 18, 2016

Rio, anyone?

"This week everyone is enjoying following the Olympics. This is first time the Olympics have been held in South America. Today's article features things to see and do if you are thinking about taking a vacation in Rio."

~ Anne Kulhanek, Premier Travel

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is described as sensuous, chaotic, sophisticated and friendly—it's one of South America's gems. Rio displays a unique blend of contrasts: old and new, tremendous wealth amid crushing poverty, an urban metropolis nestled around mountains and a huge forest.

All of Rio de Janeiro is symbolically embraced in the outstretched arms of Cristo Redentor, the statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain, a photo of which accompanies this article.

Rio de Janeiro plays host to what some call "the biggest party in the world," during the five-day holiday that is Carnival, which takes place just before Lent, in February or early March.

Street parties take place throughout the city, and the colorful samba schools parade through the city's Sambadrome to the sound of heavy drum beats.

If the buzz of the city becomes too much—during Carnival or otherwise—there's always an easy escape to the beautiful coast or to the lush Tijuca Forest that surrounds Rio de Janeiro's mountainous slopes, where you can hike, bike or jump under a waterfall.

The best and most luxurious of Rio's many hotels are on the coast, in breathtakingly beautiful beachside neighborhoods—Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and Sao Conrado.

Here's an idea of what you could do if you had 3 days to spend in Rio:

Day OneIn the morning, see the city from above by helicopter or while hang gliding, or ride the coastline or lake on a rented bicycle. Have the traditional bean stew feijoada for lunch at the Casa da Feijoada. Relax on the beach in the afternoon, before a happy hour with the locals at the Bracarense, with asalgado and cold beer. Try a Brazilian seafood dinner at Azul Marinho or Siri Mole & Cia.

Day Two—Visit a favela (shantytown) or take an architecture tour of the Niemeyer Route just across the bridge in Niteroi. Have lunch in one of the small eateries nearby. In the afternoon, take the aerial tramway from Cosmo Velho, to visit the Christ statue and see the view from Corcovado Mountain. Take a cab to the nearby Santa Teresa neighborhood for happy hour at the Bar do Mineiro. Dine at one of the nearby restaurants, or close to the Zona Sul hotels.

Day Three—Enjoy a coastal boat tour, or visit to Tijuca Forest in the morning, and hike up to Pedra Bonita. Rest in the hotel before a night on the town. Have dinner at one of the city's most fashionable restaurants—Zaza Bistro Tropical or Zuka—and then go dancing at Fosfobox, or the Carioca da Gema.

Does Rio de Janeiro sound interesting to you? Give us a call and we'll help you plan your vacation where you can do and see all that Rio has to offer.

Non-stop flights for your winter vacation!

August 4, 2016

It's that time of year! Funjet and Apple Vacations have introduced their non-stop charter flights from Milwaukee to beach destinations south of the border.

Why would you want to take a charter, you ask?

Many clients don't mind the drive to Milwaukee for the non-stop flight, typically a lower price than other airfare, and the convenience of getting directly to your destination - often, on the beach by noon! When it's blustery and cold here, that's pretty enticing.

Another benefit - if you take the "cancel for any reason insurance," they will guarantee you lowest price on your whole vacation. So buying early and locking in your dates and resort, allows you the confidence of knowing that if it goes on sale, you will get that sale price too!

The charter flights are limited to certain days of the week for each destination and run from Christmas through Easter.

The chartered Norwegian Air aircraft is a 737 with 3 seats on each side of the aisle. You can purchase seating in the front 4 rows Preferred Perks for $39 each way or rows 4 – 8 for Premium Class for $29 each way. Pre booking an exit row seat is available for $19 each way. If you don't want to wait until you get to the airport for a seat assignment, you can pre purchase a coach seat for $11 each way.

Cancun/Riviera Maya – Daily

Cozumel – Mondays

Ixtapa – Fridays

Puerto Vallarta – Tuesdays and Saturdays

Jamaica – Wednesdays and Saturdays

Punta Cana – Thursdays and Sundays

Checked baggage is complimentary if you purchase the tour companies travel insurance or purchase the upgraded seats in the front of the plane.

Baggage fees are $40 per bag round trip if you pre-pay, or $50 per bag round trip if you wait until the airport to pay.

This year's pricing seems to be in line with last year's pricing. The charters are filling up fast, so you may want to move quickly on making a vacation decision. Give us a call if you'd like us to find you the perfect beach for your getaway this winter.

Is Hawaii only for beach lovers?

July 21, 2016

On Wednesday of this week, our friend Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, was in Milwuakee, Wisconsin, participating in the Midwest "Ohana Training."

"Ohana is the Hawaiian word for family. It was interesting to hear what's new on the islands, and take a refresher course about how each island has different things to offer visitors."

Anne shared a bit of what she learned:

Hawaii is on most everyone's travel bucket list. It's an exotic US destination that appeals to a wide variety of people. Most of my clients think it's a once in a lifetime trip, but on their return, they already start planning when they can go back again! Even travelers who don't get into beaches find that the Hawaiian Islands offer plenty of things to do and see that have nothing to do with beaches.

So, Do YOU think Hawaii is only for beach lovers?

Take a helicopter ride over an active volcano on Hawaii the Big Island! Nowhere else can you find five spectacular volcanoes, lush tropical rain forests, towering waterfalls, sun-swept beaches, and an equally rich variety of cultural wonders on one island.

Click Here to See a Video of a Volcano Tour by Helicopter

You can also Whale-watch on Maui. From January through March, there are more than 3,000 humpback whales off the shores. Known as the "Valley
Isle," Maui is dotted with quaint towns, artist communities, and local favorites that have been around for generations.

Are you more of a Hiker?

Hike the Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Nicknamed the "Garden Island," Kauai is green, and flourishing with lush flora that runs from the mountains to the ocean. Kauai also offers numerous zip lines, and a mountain tube ride through the back country of the island (see the photo accompanying this article).

Anyone for diving?

Night snorkel, or dive with the manta rays on Hawaii's Kona coast. The lights attract the plankton, which in turn attracts these gentle, giants. It's an exhilarating experience! If you don't want to get your hair wet, you can have a cocktail at the Ray's on the Bay bar at the Sheraton Kona.

And of course, there's Food!

All of this activity is bound to make you hungry! Hawaii offers a unique-to-the-islands cuisine. It's a fusion of the different ethnicities that make up the island. The dining ranges from 5 star gourmet, to fresh shrimp right from the shrimp truck!

This is just a sampling of some of the adventurous things you can do to explore the beautiful islands of Hawaii. Anne will be happy to help you figure out which island will be the right one for you to explore.

"Taste Your Way Around The World"

July 7, 2016

Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, poses an interesting question this week:

Do you have a favorite travel memory that has food as a part of it? I know that I do, and often they are the highlight of the trip.

Many of my fondest travel memories have a culinary aspect to them. Whether it is experimenting by trying an unusual local dish for the first time, or savoring a freshly steamed latte and pastry at a sidewalk café, they all add to the enjoyment and memory of my world travels.

There are many ways that you can incorporate your enjoyment of food into your travels. It may be a top priority for you, or just a welcome addition to a well-planned vacation.

Let's explore a few ways that food can enhance your trip:

The Farm-to-Table movement is perhaps one of the best ways to learn about a culture and meet local people. A popular tour may include a visit to the market; where you collect ingredients, and then going on to the kitchen to prepare your findings. Wouldn't it be interesting to tour an olive grove, learning about olive oil, from the raw product all the way through the pressing, and finishing off with olive oil tasting? I assure you, you will never look at olive oil the same way again.

The Food Network has made us all more aware of, and fans of, celebrity chefs. Is there a chef that you would love to meet? I know that I would jump at the chance to cook with Ina Garten of the Barefoot Contessa brand. Guests sailing on select Oceania Cruises can enjoy culinary demonstrations, and special shore excursions hosted by the legendary master chef Jacques Pepin. When traveling to Napa, snagging a dinner reservation at Thomas Keller's French Laundry would be a highlight your friends would surely envy.

There are a million different Cooking Schools available around the globe. In the Provence region of France, Patricia Wells offers her week long cooking classes. Learn techniques with emphasis on provencal dishes baked in a wood-fired bread oven. The classes are held in an 18th century hilltop farmhouse, and guests stay in the village, at a small inn.

Do you need more than just a focus on food? In Costa Rica, try a culinary adventure that includes a coffee plantation tour, cheese factory visit, canopy walk among the clouds, river rafting, and a hands-on cooking class, all amidst the lush beauty of this Central American hideaway. You get to choose how much of your time and energy is spent on food, and on your surroundings. After all, it's your vacation, and should be tailored specifically for you.

Why don't you let me help you make your culinary dreams come true? I have some outstanding connections who specialize in discovering a region through cuisine. I would love to hear from you as to your dream trip!

What's your passport IQ?

June 23, 2016

This week, Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, shares some helpful information with us about passports

You've been planning your vacation for quite some time. Your bags are packed, and you're headed to the airport. Yes; your passport is in your carry on, and you are good to go, or are you?

Recently I've been hearing horror stories of travelers being denied boarding, or not allowed into a country due to issues with their passports.

This is not something that I want anyone to experience, so here are a few things to be aware of:

Expiration Date:

Your expiration date must be at least six months beyond your return travel date, for most countries to allow you into that country. The rule is in place in order to ensure a visitor who unexpectedly needs to stay longer than originally planned, still has a valid passport to leave the country.

Condition:

It must be in perfect condition. Water damage, frayed edges, ripped pages, or damaged covers are all reasons for authorities to suspect tampering. They can deny you boarding the aircraft, or entrance into a country. Recently I heard about a dog chewing on the corner of a passport, and causing the traveler to miss part of their trip, due to having to get an emergency passport replacement. That's not the way I want to start off my vacation. It's also not recommended to carry your passport in your jeans pocket, which can cause it to curl and be suspect.

Empty Pages:

Some countries require between two and four blank pages in your passport for visas before you enter the country. For example, South Africa requires two blank pages. You can check if the country you're visiting requires blank page, and if so, how many, on the State Department's website

Checking your passport, and perhaps having to renew it, is best done far in advance. That way, you can avoid stress of hoping to get it back in time for your trip. Then, you can relax and concentrate on enjoying your vacation, stress free.

Is the upgrade worth it?

June 16, 2016

Today, Ann Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, responds to the question, "What's the difference between average and luxury?"

In travel, there are many opportunities to choose to upgrade or select a luxury product. If it's something you've never done or are unfamiliar with, you often wonder, "Will the price difference be worth the extra cost?"

Recently, I purposely selected a luxury cruise in Alaska, to compare it to the other mainstream cruises that I have sailed on in the past. It was tough work, but a task I am willing to endure for the benefit of my clients!

A cruise has specific features, but many of the differentiations can be used when comparing resorts or tour companies as well.

Size of ship and number of guests on board vary between lines - the luxury lines having fewer passengers, and more staff to serve them. That equates to faster service and less lines. The ship I sailed on had 700 guests, compared to the average ship with 2,100 guests. It was wonderful to never have to stand in line - for meals, elevators or getting on and off the ship. Everything was fast and easy.

Choices were plentiful; with very few limits. The dining room was open, and when you arrived you were seated, with your choice of table size. It was easy to sit with new friends or dine alone, just the two of us. There wasn't a fee to dine at the specialty restaurants, and the 24 hour room service allows you to order anything from the restaurant menus.

Inclusions is where I noticed the biggest difference. On this ship everything was included, with the exception of the spa, casino, or shopping. All of the drinks, gratuities, and shore excursions were included. There was a complimentary self-service laundry on board, which made it convenient to pack lightly. A naturalist was on board, and gave a delightful daily presentation about our upcoming stop. Having free Wi-Fi was probably the most appreciated inclusion, making it easy to stay in touch while away.

There are many cruise lines to choose from - the contemporary, premium and luxury lines. Add to that the adventure lines that immerse you in a totally unique experience. I can help you determine what will be the perfect one for you, while offering you comparisons, to make the best decision for you.

Why not give us a call so we can discuss the possibilities?

Explore the Mediterranean Coast of Italy

May 19, 2016

Have you ever visited the Mediterranean coast of Italy?

The Cinque Terre is sure to be one of your highlights.

Along the northwestern coast of Italy is the Cinque Terre (Five Lands), which is a string of five small towns dating back to the Middle Ages.

They're located on a gorgeous, rocky stretch of the Ligurian Riviera coastline, between the cities of Genoa and La Spezia. It's easy to get around, making it fun to explore.

The towns of the Cinque Terra are locked between mountains and the sea. They are best known for their iconic, colorful houses dotting the coastline, all built on tiny, winding alleys, and steep hills.

With the lack of farmland, locals shaped the steep rocks of the surrounding mountains into dry stone terraces, where they grew vineyards and produced white wines and Lemoncello.

The area is still unspoiled, and several hiking paths, famous for their charming nature and extraordinary views, connect the five towns.

During the day, the towns can be teaming with visitors. There are also ferries that run between the cities, making it really easy to travel among the cities, or even just to sight see the area. Because of the rare flora and unique environment, the coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides have been named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Each town is different, but they all have plenty of places to eat and drink, with the bonus of people-watching. You'll also find many local artists selling their pottery or paintings.

Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel adds this: "One of the reasons I love Italy so much, is that it's so varied and diverse from region to region. It makes you want to return again and again to explore another treasure. Call if you want to plan your next exploration of Italy!

Celebration Trips

May 12, 2016

Travel brings people together, forges closer bonds and creates memories that’ll last forever. Which is why, you might want to consider a planning celebration vacation.

There are many reasons we have to celebrate. An Anniversary, Birthday, Retirement, Health Recovery, Work Promotion and any other number of events could be your reason for planning a celebration trip.

These milestone events mark changes in our lives that need to be celebrated, made special and create lasting memories that we’ll talk about for years to come.

Just as there are numerous reasons to celebrate, there are just as many ways to do it!

Just the Two of You: Some occasions are best celebrated alone, where you can enjoy each other’s company and just relax and enjoy.

Family: Traveling together can re-connect a family, and most importantly, let you all have fun together. In our busy, hectic lives, too often we don’t make time for just plain fun.

Multi-Generational Family: Vacationing together with grandparents, parents, and kids will be the catalyst of stories for years to come. Creating bonds, and getting reacquainted with family, are just some of the benefits of traveling together.

Group of Friends: When you want fun, activities, and relaxation, who better to spend time with than your friends? Usually your friends will share the same interests as you, so everyone will be on the same page.

Next time that a milestone or big event happens in your life, consider if it might be best celebrated by taking a trip. Even just a weekend away can constitute a vacation, and still have all of the same good effects on you.

Anne Kulhanek, and Premier Travel will be happy to help you to make this celebration effortless and enjoyable, by taking care of all the details while you sit back and enjoy.

Romantic Bungalows

April 7, 2016

If the crazy weather of the Green Bay area (lately) has you wondering when Spring will actually get here, maybe this week's news from Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, will be a welcome diversion!

"In my opinion, the most romantic hotel room on earth, is an over the water bungalow."

On our 25th wedding anniversary, Allen and I vacationed in Tahiti. Before sailing around the Islands of Tahiti, we stayed several nights in an over water bungalow on Moorea. It was one of my most memorable experiences as I geek out over luxurious hotel rooms.

Our bungalow had a glass floor underneath the coffee table. In the evening, under-floor lighting attracts fish - so you have your very own private aquarium. I also enjoyed the private balcony with chaise lounges.  The steps down to the water allow you to snorkel right from your room.

In Tahiti they even deliver room service via canoe, which is quite unique, and a great way to be pampered!

A bit closer to home, in Montego Bay Jamaica, Sandals Royal Caribbean is building over the water bungalows off their private island.

Perched on a deck hovering over the sparking sea, these breathtaking accommodations feature see-through glass floors, a tranquility soaking tub, an over the water hammock for two, and a private infinity pool and Jacuzzi with outdoor shower. The private boat transfers and butler service are added touches for your unforgettable stay.

These suites will be opening in December and you can book your stay now. Opening September 1st, are the over water bungalows in the Riviera Maya of Mexico; strategically placed on world famous Maroma Beach.

It's exciting to know that we now have some choices for luxurious, exotic stays, within a three or four hour flight of home. What a great way to spend an anniversary, birthday or special occasion that will be fondly remembered for years to come! Contact me if you would like more information about these amazing accommodations.

Give Back, Pay It Forward, & Have Fun!

March 31, 2016

Just before Easter, Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, had the pleasure of participating in a Purple Walk at the Mall of America.

"The walk was in support of Epilepsy Awareness; it helped to spread an important message, and it was fun being in the mall before opening! There were even photo ops with characters, as you can see from the photo of me, with Dora, in the picture accompanying this article.

Bigger is not always better!

March 24, 2016

We received some great travel information and advice recently, from Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel:

"(Recently) I had the pleasure of attending a business meeting in Savannah. The business meeting was inspiring. Our host made sure that we tasted the great foods of the South, and experienced all Savannah has to offer.

I find that food plays a huge part of the travel experience. The photo I've included is taken at the Fish Camp, a local eatery that serves fresh shrimp caught that day! Inspired by my Savannah experience, I'd like to share with you some of the benefits of staying in a locally owned, authentic hotel or inn.

Have you ever had the opportunity to stay at a hotel or inn that was locally owned?

Perhaps the owner is also the manager, so they have a vested interest in the enjoyment of your stay. Frequently, a small locally owned hotel will have a unique and individual personality that may be indicative of the area or region of the country.

You will surely have a different experience than staying in a large corporate run hotel.

The authentic may come at a higher price than the chain, but consider what is included in that higher rate. On my stay in Savannah, the inn included a full hot breakfast, as well as wine & appetizers every evening. Like clockwork, at 6pm every evening, the bellman delivered an ice cream bar to every guest's room. Needless to say, the ice cream was my favorite amenity!

In Savannah our room overlooked the river.

It was enjoyable to watch the river traffic, along with noticing the tides and changes in the river. I had fun visiting with other guests during the cocktail hour; finding out about them and their travels. I learned about a great museum that was not on my radar.

It's always heartwarming when someone goes out of their way to ensure everything's perfect for you.

Promptly responding to a request, or giving you something you don't expect, can have a huge impact on your stay. We needed a power strip for our meeting, and not only did it get delivered right away, he also made sure that we were all connected to the wifi before he left. Those little thoughtful gestures ensure that things go smoother for you. Don't we all crave easier and smoother?

Next time you are planning a vacation, be sure to consider what you might gain by staying at a locally owned hotel. It may enhance your trip and cause you to have a more authentic and rewarding trip.

Meet Anne Kulhanek

February 25, 2016

In between Travel Seminars, Educational Trips, and her Consultations with Clients, we actually caught up with Anne Kulanek, of Premier Travel!

Anne is a very friendly, engaging, and fun person - and we'd like to share with you a bit of our recent interview.

Anne has been in business now for 15 years, and she enjoys the path she's chosen:

"Travel is an ever-changing industry. There’s always something new to learn. It’s fun and exciting helping people plan their vacations. In a way, I get to live vicariously through my clients. It’s a way for me to serve people by making things easier for them.

I love being able to help people broaden their experiences, and take in the wonders of the world. Travel is life-changing, and provides us with an understanding of different cultures. It makes us realize that underneath, we are all alike; even though we live very different lives.

Another joy for me, is being able to help strengthen relationships. Whether a couple is honeymooning, taking a wedding anniversary trip, a family vacation, or just a yearly trip. Getting away together, away from the stresses and interruptions of daily life, allows you to re-connect and, more importantly, have fun together."

Anne, an avid reader, besides being a travel expert, was eager to share with us one of her favorite quotations from Mark Twain:

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”

Anne and her husband Allen have been married for 37 years, have 3 grown children and "5 amazing grandchildren."

"Our hobbies include travel, kayaking, bike riding, hiking, and cross country skiing. I’m a member of the Luxemburg Area Chamber of Commerce (currently serving as president) and I'm also active in the Buy Local Kewaunee County group, as well as being a member of the Green Bay West Rotary Club."

We asked Anne if she had anything else to share with our Members and Readers:

"We believe creating your ideal travel experience begins with a practical and unbiased approach. We begin by interviewing you, finding your likes and dislikes, your past travel experiences, and what you envision for this trip. After we understand your expectations, we’ll make suggestions for you.

Often we share our knowledge about the destination gleaned from personal travel experience. We shop for our clients with reputable suppliers who often specialize in that region of the world, or that particular type of travel.

Our goal is to get the best price on the best quality vacation; realizing that comfort and convenience may outweigh a bargain price.

That said, there are always great deals! I’ll shop all avenues, and look for the best pricing; looking at all the sales. The key is to be flexible on dates. Interestingly, even though pricing was higher this year (over last year) there are a still things for which pricing really good. Even if it’s “last minute,” I’m still finding good deals and values."

Adults Only Resorts

February 4, 2016

What makes an Adult Only Resort different?

Well, according to Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, there's some differences to consider:

"Our vacation time is precious, and we all want to have the best vacation that we can. Resorts and hotels vary greatly. Of course, the star rating of resort usually has a direct correlation of the quality of services. Another big factor in your experience can be the type of a resort you choose. Family friendly resorts have a different tone than an adult only resort; and it's up to you to decide which one is better for you. It seems like there are more and more Adult Only resorts coming on-line, which is exciting and gives you more choices."

What are the big differences?

"Atmosphere is one big one. There will be no screaming children, splashing at the pool. Most resorts have a "party" pool where the music is playing, and it has a lively vibe. Often this is the pool where the activity staff has the pool games and activities to engage the people. The tranquil, romantic pool is the place to unplug, read a book, or take a nap. Typically there will be bar service at both and it's not unusual to have more choices than just those two pools.

At an Adult Only resort, there are typically more choices for dining; and often no reservations required. If you arrive at a restaurant during a busy time, they send you to the bar to enjoy a drink while you wait for a table. Frequently, these resorts also offer premium brand liquors; due to their audience and tastes.

It's not uncommon to have luxurious accommodations. Larger rooms, spacious balconies, and Jacuzzi tubs have become the norm. Flat screen TVs with international cable, and a docking station on the bedside table so you can bring your own tunes with you are now standard features. You can easily upgrade to a private plunge pool, or the ever popular swim out suite; where you step from your patio into the pool that leads to the swim up pool bar.

Occasionally a client will have a wrong idea of "Adults Only," thinking it's either X rated or for swingers. There are a limited number of resorts that cater to that crowd, but the majority are for people looking to get away and relax on their vacations. It's a comfortable setting, where they are being well taken care of, in an adult setting. I'd be happy to help you explore which type of resort will suit you the best."

Do You Really Need Travel Insurance?

January 14, 2016

You've been dreaming about your vacation for months ...

Imagining what it looks like, what you'll be doing....perfection! The day is fast approaching; you've started packing, and are counting the days and hours to your much needed vacation. Everything is set, and nothing's going to stop you from taking off to sunshine, warm temperatures, and pure bliss!

Suddenly something changes... your child is sick, your Mom's in the hospital, you fall on the ice and break an arm. It's completely unexpected and not putting you in a good place. Now you need to make the fateful decision, do you stay home and take care of this or do you still go?

You have to make a tough decision, and just you're just not sure what to do.

If you decided to purchase the travel insurance when you booked the trip, suddenly things don't seem quite so bad. If your predicament is due to a covered reason, you are able to make a decision based on what is right to do, not whether you'll be losing the cost of your vacation.

Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, tells us that most of her clients who do file travel insurance claims, do so in two categories:

Trip Cancellation

Before you leave there's a sickness, injury, or death of immediate family or traveling companion. You are cancelling your trip, and are making a claim with the insurance company for reimbursement.

Trip Interruption:

The airport closes due to a storm, or you are mid-way through vacation and you must return home for a medical emergency. You just missed several days of your dream vacation for which you had paid in full. The insurance company will reimburse the unused portion of your trip.

There are many types of travel insurance, each with their own coverages. We always check several options for our client's and offer them the best policy to protect their vacation investment.

Shopping in Italy

January 7, 2016

Most people shop on their trips and it's always a good idea to know what's unique to the location you are going.

This week, Premier Travel brings us some great shopping tips for those enjoying vacation or business travel in Italy.

Clothing: Italians have a special way of designing clothes, matching fabrics and colors and shapes. There are areas where they actually make those beautiful fabrics (such as the area around Lake Como, for instance, which is famous for silk). Even Italian men are more 'daring' when it comes to matching colors, they would wear any color in their shirts, even if it 's a 'feminine' one (the pinks, the pastels) with no fear of appearing 'less masculine' for that, or wear more fitting clothes (such as trousers and jackets, like the jackets which are traditional in the 'Neapolitan tailoring', as opposed to the British ones.

Leather: Leather is used either for clothing or for handbags, purses, shoes and small accessories (key rings, belts, jewelry etc). Florence is definitely THE place to go for leather. A good Italian leather bag can have a timeless design, shape and color, or be a bright, happy compliment to any outfit. Italy has a great tradition in shoe making.

Food: Food is king, in Italy! Whether you talk about the hundreds and hundreds of different cheese sorts, or cold cuts, or products like olive oil (from many different areas: Te Garda Lake in the North, Liguria in the Northwest, Tuscany in the centre, Abruzzi, Marche on the Adriatic sea, Puglia, Calabria, Sicily and others in the South. Of course, oil from different areas has a different taste, from mild to stronger). And what about bread? There's no such thing as 'Italian bread' in Italy, as every region and almost every city has a different kind of bread, with different names and preparations. But this applies to any Italian product or to Italian Cuisine in general. Let's not forget sweets, cakes, tarts... and products such as Sicilian almonds and pistachios, or chocolate and Calabrian licorice, or gelato!

Of course, shopping is only one of many things to do in Italy!  Call Premier Travel today, and learn even more!

Bring on the Swimming Pigs!

December 17, 2015

Now, Honestly, Did you ever go swimming with a pig?  How about with Lots of Pigs?

Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, shares some details of an unusual and fun experience during her recent trip to Exuma in the Bahamas.

"We enjoyed a fun filled, action packed excursion aboard a 35 foot PowerCat. On our tour we snorkeled, went beach combing, and experienced the beauty of the Exuma Islands all in one tour. We stopped and played on a sandbar; enjoying the sunshine and cold beverages.

On one stop we visited an island with endangered Bahamian Rock Iguanas. The original natives of the Bahamas once called this island their home. Our captain provided us with grapes to feed the iguanas. Gals with red polish on their toes had to keep them hidden, as to not confuse the iguanas who might very well think their toes were grapes!

No journey into the cays is complete without feeding the always hilarious Swimming Pigs. We had turkey hot dogs ready to feed the pigs. It was interesting that the adult pigs started swimming out to the boat as we arrived, and were hanging onto the back of the boat; ready for their hotdogs!

Once the anchor is set, everyone gets off the boat and wades in waist high water. The pigs swim toward you and you hold out your hotdog right above the water for them to grab and eat.

What have been Your favorite or most memorable travel experiences? Let me know if you need help planning your next vacation getaway."

What's happening at Sandals in Exuma?

December 10, 2015

Great Exuma island is one of the many Bahamian Islands.

The island is 37 miles long and 1 mile across. It's known for its white sandy beaches, water sports, and laid back Bahamian hospitality.

There are 3 hotels on Exuma. Sandals is a gorgeous resort - spread along a beautiful sugar sand beach. There are a wide variety of restaurants. From wood fired Italian Pizzas, to gourmet French cuisine, and even a nod to the Brits with a traditional English pub.

All of the rooms here are 2 room suites, with plenty of space and a nice balcony. The top rooms are the villas placed along the beach. Just picture yourself in this villa with your own private infinity pool, your butler attending to your every need. Wow, just imagine how great that would be!

Shopping tips for the traveler

December 3, 2015

Our friend Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, has some great advice regarding items to purchase when we travel.  While some of these may be for our own "remembrances," they can also make wonderful gifts for Christmas and other occasions.

"I am fortunate to travel regularly, so I can be shopping all year long as I traverse the world. Here is a list of popular things to purchase while you are traveling:

Mexico – Pure Vanilla, Tequila

Caribbean Islands – Hand woven baskets and wood carvings

Costa Rica – Wood products

Hawaii – Macadamia nuts, Pineapple

Tahiti – Black pearls

Ireland – Knits, fishermen's sweaters

Belgium – Lace and Chocolates

Scotland – Whiskey

France – Fashion, perfume

Switzerland – Chocolate, Swiss Army knife, Swiss watch

Czech Republic – glass and crystal

Italy – Fashion, leather, glass

...When it comes to picking out the perfect gift for my family and friends, I know it's the thought that counts, but I want to give something that is personal and they don't already have."

What's New Near Cancun?

November 19, 2015

Recently Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, attended a travel conference in Cancun Mexico, where she had the pleasure of catching up on what's new and exciting:

"The rebound of the economy has made an impact on new hotel builds as well as renovations to many of your favorite resorts. It's exciting to see all of the changes and updates that are happening.

Playa Mujeres is one of those up and coming places. It's a gorgeous stretch of white sandy beach development north of Cancun. The drive time from the airport is about 20 minutes, or just 10 minutes from downtown Cancun. Playa Mujeres is a gated community, consisting of a harbor, beautiful 5 star resorts, and a golf course. The beach seems to be protected from huge waves, due to Isla Mujeres being so close. You can see the island on the horizon, and there are ferries that run between the harbor and island all day long.

There is a resort for every type of traveler here. If you're looking for an Adult-Only resort, the Playa Mujeres is a great bet. The rooms are huge, and all have massive balconies on which to while away your afternoons. The food here is excellent and there are 9 restaurant choices for you to explore.

...It's a great place to vacation if you'd like to relax and be pampered. Let me know if you have any questions about any of these resorts or other properties up in this area."

Planning Your Trip to Venice

November 5, 2015

This week, we heard from Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, and she shared a bit with us about her recent trip to Italy:

"Italy has been on my bucket list for a while, and it didn't disappoint. It's amazing how unique and different each region of the same country can be. Yet there were many similarities in the people, the foods, and the architecture. The tour guides made the sightseeing come to life, as they shared history along with personal stories and insights."

Have you considered a trip to Italy?  If so, Anne suggests that you explore Venice.  Here are some helpful hints for planning your travels:

"Start out your vacation right by having a private transfer from the airport. There's nothing more convenient than to know that you'll have someone meeting you at the airport who speaks English. They'll take you through the maze of people and taxi drivers, directly out the car that will deposit you at the water taxi stand, which is a few blocks away from the airport. Right now, there's a big construction project going on, which makes things a little congested.

Take a private water taxi to your hotel. Yes, there's a cheaper public water "bus" that's crowded - very crowded; especially if you have luggage. Having a private transfer in a water taxi provides you with space, an amazing first glimpse of Venice, and the convenience of being dropped off directly at your hotel. No schlepping your luggage up and down the bridges, and over the cobblestone streets.

Pre-arrange a city tour before you leave home. It will save you time once you are there, plus you'll have "front of the line" access to many of the top visitor spots. When you plan ahead, it will guarantee that you'll have an English speaking guide. It's also a good idea to book a small group tour. I saw some groups with 50 tourists trying to follow their guide through the crowded streets. Small groups of 20 or less afford you a more comfortable and interesting experience.

Venice may be confusing, but just remember that you are on an island. Get a map from your hotel, and have them explain the street signs. Wear comfortable walking shoes, have some Euro in your pocket for bathrooms, and head out to explore the city. Getting lost in Venice is one of the best ways to explore it and see what the city is really like. Contact me if you'd like more information about what to do and see in Venice."

Things to do before traveling to Europe

October 14, 2015

Recently, Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel, took in an educational trip of Italy. She shared with us some of her preparations that make her travels more seamless and enjoyable:

Money: It's a good idea if you can get some Euros at your bank before you leave. Have just enough for cab fare, coffee, or to use the restroom (which is typically 50 cents). Always have a few coins in your pocket to be prepared. When in Europe, the most advantageous exchange rate is obtained by getting cash from an ATM. They are located everywhere - including the airports. Find out ahead of time what (or if) your credit card charges for international exchange rate. Put the majority of your purchases on your credit card. The most accepted cards are Visa and Mastercard, and they do use the chip technology.

Phone: If your cell phone has a sim card, you will be able to use your phone in Europe. I was able to call my provider and for $40, I can accept 100 minutes of calls - or make them while I'm away. When I'm on WiFi, it's easy to use Magic Jack to make free international calls. The best way to ensure you're not running up your phone bill is to keep it on airplane mode until you need to use it.

Credit Card: Call your credit card company to advise them that you will be traveling, which dates that you'll be gone, as well as where you will be. That way they'll know it's you charging internationally, and won't put a hold on your credit card. I also take a photo of the front and back of my credit card and email to myself. That way I could access those numbers while I'm away if I'd happen to lose my purse. I do the same with my passport.

It’s never too early to plan your winter vacation

October 1, 2015

Even though it’s absolutely gorgeous outside, now is the time to start planning your winter vacation. Whether you have to go during a specific week during spring break or have the flexibility to travel anytime in the first quarter, the earlier you book – the better the rates and availability.

In the past several years, some lucky folks snagged a great last minute deal by waiting. That works when demand isn’t very strong. It’s not the case this year! Anne Kulhanek, of Premier Travel tells us, "I’m seeing many of the convenient flights and popular resorts on sold out status. Booking now can still afford you an early booking bonus and offer you choices on resorts and destinations."

Where are this year’s top destinations?

Many of Anne's clients prefer the Non-stop Charter flights from Milwaukee. Jamaica, Riviera Maya, Punta Cana and Puerto Vallarta are the destinations that Premier Travel is booking the most. Each of those destinations offers a wide variety of resorts; with something that will suit every taste.

Hawaii remains a popular winter vacation spot. You can mix the sun/sand/surf experience with the Hawaiian culture that encompasses food, history, and entertainment. The Aloha spirit is felt in the warm welcome you receive from the locals. Whale watching, volcanoes, and swimming with Manta Rays are just a few of the activities to pursue. Multi-generational families find the perfect mix of relaxation and activity when they visit Hawaii. It’s easy to accommodate large family groups with the wide variety of condos and resorts from which to choose.

Anne reminds us: "If you are unsure of where to spend your vacation this year, give us a call to set up an appointment. After we discuss your preferences, I can make suggestions for you that will fit your needs and get you away from the cold winter weather that’s sure to arrive. Hopefully not too soon!

Great Travel Options For Wine Lovers

September 24, 2015

"Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life’s most civilized pleasures." - Michael Broadbent

Travel and wine seem to go hand in hand. Great conversations with interesting people flow smoothly, when you have a nice glass of wine to sip and enjoy. When you travel, its fun to incorporate your interests along with things that you love to do. Learning about wine making, and trying unique and different wines has become extremely easy to do as you travel the world.

So, the question is, "To whom do we go for advice on such a unique experience?"  The answer is: to Someone who's "been there, and done that."  Travelers who live in the Greater Green Bay Area are lucky to have such a travel professional to count on.  Anne Kulhanek, owner of Premier Travel, has personally visited the areas highlighted below, and can give you firsthand knowledge, vs. reading reviews on websites.

Several river cruises in Europe offer wine cruises that showcase the acclaimed wine regions along Europe’s great rivers. These unique sailings are hosted by top wine experts, and feature complimentary lectures, wine tastings, exquisite cuisine with paired wines, and excursions to historic vineyards and wine cellars. You can learn about centuries-old wine traditions, sample one-of-a-kind vintages, and enjoy private wine-themed excursions.

Taste your way through three significant wine regions on the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail. Enjoy stunning scenery, beautiful forest parks, buzzing nightlife, and indulgent food experiences, as you journey from Hawkes Bay in the North Island, to Marlborough in the South Island.

On this touring route you will have the opportunity to taste and shop at more than 120 cellar doors, as well as a multitude of vineyard restaurants and cafés. Hawke’s Bay is the land of robust Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. In Wairarapa, Pinot Noir gets star billing, while Marlborough is blockbuster Sauvignon Blanc country.

A little closer to home is the Napa Valley, North America’s premier wine, food, and arts capital. Though only thirty-five miles long and five miles at its widest, the Napa Valley has a well-earned reputation as the home of America’s fine wine industry. It's prized for natural beauty, a phenomenal culinary scene, and a thriving arts community. There's a variety of resorts at which to stay, and it's easy to get there. Many travelers pair Napa with a stay in San Francisco; to make it a perfect week’s vacation.

Anne Kulhanek is a Certified Travel Consultant; a travel professional right here in the Green Bay area.  If you enjoy wine, and would like to get some advice on how to have that once in a lifetime Wine Vacation, get in touch with Anne.  She would love to help you!
