The Summer Academy of Medicine is designed to provide high school students with the opportunity to explore careers in medicine and the biomedical fields. Through a wide variety of research opportunities, laboratory work, hands-on learning, and contact with community health partners, students will be able to evaluate whether a career in medicine or the biomedical sciences is for them. They will also meet like-minded students and discover firsthand what it is like to be a physician, medical student, or scientist.
During the 3-1/2 day program, students will explore wide-ranging career options in medicine and the biomedical sciences, and gain knowledge regarding the required educational paths. Through contact with current medical students and faculty, participants will learn about the skills and passions that drive one to serve in these fields. A strong emphasis on ethics, collaborative work, leadership and service to the community is included throughout the program.
Classes will be taught by faculty and students from the Medical College of Wisconsin-Green Bay and St. Norbert College. The program is open to students who will be entering their junior or senior years of high school and a limited number of scholarships are available. Students will be housed in Bergstrom Hall on the St. Norbert College campus; meals, snacks, and evening activities are provided. Parents will be invited to join participants for the closing ceremony and lunch. Campus tours, as well as sessions on the college admissions process and financial aid will also be offered for parents and participants.
The Summer Academy of Medicine is a partnership program offered by the Medical College of Wisconsin-Green Bay and St. Norbert College.
