Green Bay Area Public School Boundary Adjustment Advisory Committee Meeting Rescheduled to February 28
The Boundary Adjustment Advisory Committee meeting originally scheduled for February 20th has been rescheduled to Wednesday, February 28th, at 6:00pm. The meeting will be virtual. The committee will be reviewing conceptual boundary scenarios. The meeting will be live streamed and can be viewed on YouTube.
The committee will be reviewing two conceptual boundary scenarios that address the recommendations included in the Board of Education’s resolution to evaluate the impact of adding 4K-8s and shifting boundaries and providing their input. There are two alternative scenarios, based on the Board of Education asking administration to provide some options as a result of community feedback last summer.
The two scenarios include the following:
Boundary changes to create a 4K-8 at Franklin Middle School OR a 4K-6 at Franklin Middle School and a 7-12 at West High School (alternate option)
Boundary changes to create a 4K-8 at Langlade Elementary, at McAuliffe Elementary, and at Washington Middle School (alternate option)
Feedback shared over the summer recommended that the District consider a 4K-8 in the downtown area. The District is proposing that the Boundary Adjustment Advisory Committee review a conceptual boundary scenario which would create a 4K-8 on the Washington Middle School site and consolidate with Howe Elementary School. The District chose Howe Elementary School for several reasons including:
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) is conducting a study of the Mason Street Bridge. The plan is to reconstruct the bridge in 2032-33. They are reviewing several options, all of which will have an impact on Howe Elementary and raise some potential safety concerns.
Howe Elementary and Washington Middle School both serve the Navarino Neighborhood.
The consultant, Woolpert, will not be providing a scenario that closes Washington Middle School. Upon further exploration, it was not possible to come up with a reasonable boundary solution that did not result in overcrowding at Edison Middle School.
The Boundary Adjustment Advisory Committee’s role as stated in the Board of Education charter is to assist in developing a set of boundary changes required to implement the school consolidations and closures proposed in the resolution titled “Board Resolution Related to the Facility Master Planning Task Force Recommendations pertaining to community impact of repurposing schools to 4K-8 facilities and proposed school boundary changes” approved on June 5th, 2023. Boundaries are to be developed to ensure equity and the continued diversity of school populations.
After the Boundary Advisory Committee meeting, Woolpert will revise the conceptual boundary scenarios to include the committee’s feedback. The revised conceptual boundary scenarios will be available from March 12th – 15th, 2024 for staff, parent/guardian and community member feedback.
There will be another opportunity in April/May for feedback on the final boundary scenarios, prior to the committee’s recommendations being presented to the Board of Education in June 2024.
