Green Bay Invests $1.325 Million in 14 Projects to Improve Parks

Posted on 6-22-2023

The City of Green Bay is embarking on an extensive series of park projects this year, with a total investment of $1.325 million. These projects aim to revitalize and improve various parks and recreational facilities throughout the city, offering enhanced experiences for residents and visitors alike.

As found on the City’s Website, Here are some of the Projects:

Beaumont Park – 1600 Sue Lane

½ Playground Replacement – Cost: $75,000

In order to replace the playgrounds on a 30-year cycle, the City needs to replace two playgrounds per year.  This is one of the oldest playgrounds in the park system and was installed in 1997.  For playgrounds of this age, it becomes difficult to find replacement parts when items break.  One half of the playground has already been replaced.

Shelter Roof Replacement – Cost: $10,000

The shingles on these roofs have reached their lifespan.  If the shingles are not replaced there is the possibility of water damage to the building structure, which could in turn add to the cost to repair this roof in future years.

Beaver Dam – 1402 Springdale Lane

Culvert Engineering – Cost: $50,000

There is a culvert located within the entrance drive to the parking lot located off Springdale Lane.  This culvert is failing and is need of repair.  This funding will cover the cost of engineering and permitting to replace the culvert.

Colburn – 1025 South Fisk Street

North Playground Replacement – Cost: $150,000

In order to replace the playgrounds on a 30-year cycle, the City needs to replace two playgrounds per year.  This is one of the oldest playgrounds in the park system and was installed in 1994.  For playgrounds of this age, it becomes difficult to find replacement parts when items break.

Dog Park – Location Undetermined

Cost: $50,000

The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department is working on comprehensive planning for dog parks throughout the City.  This funding will allow dog parks to be developed once locations have been selected and approved.

Joannes – 215 South Baird Street

Pool Maintenance Building Reroofing – Cost: $45,000

The shingles on these roofs have reached their lifespan.  If the shingles are not replaced there is the possibility of water damage to the building structure, which could in turn add to the cost to repair this roof in future years.

Skate Park Improvements Engineering – Cost: $25,000

The Skate Park user group has been fundraising over several years to install upgrades to the Joannes skate park facility.  Recently, the user group has considered finding another location for a new skate park.  This funding along with the $20,000 of funding already on hand will be used to hire a skate park consultant to select a location for where skate park improvements should be focused, create a conceptual design, cost estimate and construction documents for the recommended work.

Joannes/East High Parking Lot Replacement – Cost: $350,000

There are several parking lots throughout the park system that are in need of total replacement.  This lot was installed over 30 years ago and is in need of a total replacement.  The total anticipated cost for this project is $700,000.  The Green Bay School District will fund ½ of the cost.

Kennedy Park – 2227 Farlin Avenue

Shelter Roof Replacement – Cost: $10,000

The shingles on these roofs have reached their lifespan.  If the shingles are not replaced there is the possibility of water damage to the building structure, which could in turn add to the cost to repair this roof in future years.

Olde Preble – 1860 Hillview Drive

Stormwater Management – Cost: $25,000

As part of the redevelopment of the park we are required by City Ordinance to engineer and install stormwater management to accommodate the future modifications to the park.  This funding will cover the cost to hire an engineer to design the stormwater management.

Perkins – 600 North Fisk Street

Ballfield Lighting & Hockey Renovation – Cost: $450,000

$450,000 was bonded in 2022 to convert one little league field to a baseball field ballfield at Perkins Park.  To complete this project, the hockey rink will need to be relocated. This funding will cover the cost to relocate the hockey rink and to install new lighting for the hockey rink and ballfield.

Landscaping/Disc Golf Improvements – Cost: $50,000

The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department is working on a master plan for the northeast area of the park where hundreds of trees have been removed due to the Emerald Ash Borer and storm damage.  A disc golf consultant has been hired to redesign the disc golf course from an 18-hole course to a 9-hole course.  This funding will cover the costs to implement some of the master plan including tree planting and disc golf improvements within the park.

Shelter Roof Replacement – Cost: $15,000

The shingles on these roofs have reached their lifespan.  If the shingles are not replaced there is the possibility of water damage to the building structure, which could in turn add to the cost to repair this roof in future years.

Resch Aquatic Center – Address: 1058 Reed Street

Air Conditioning Throughout Building – Cost: $20,000

The office, concessions, and back concession storage areas at the facility need air conditioning to create safer and more comfortable working conditions for park staff and to ensure that the food that is being stored is temperature regulated.

From playground replacements to roof repairs, culvert engineering to landscaping improvements, these endeavors demonstrate the city’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing its park system.
