Port of Green Bay: Don’t Miss the Boat ~ First Ship Contest Now Open!

Even though the shipping season has just come to a close for the Port of Green Bay, we’re gearing up for the start of a new season! Discover Green Bay, the official sponsor of the 2024 First Ship Contest, is ready to is ready to take your guess.

As part of the First Ship Contest, members of the public are asked to share the date and time they believe the first ship will arrive in the Port of Green Bay this spring. The person with the closest guess will win a prize package from Discover Green Bay and the Port of Green Bay.

This Year’s Prize Package Includes:

A one-night stay and complimentary gift basket from St. Brendan’s Inn

A Port of Green Bay swag bag

A 200th Anniversary Brown County Monopoly Game

A 2024 Great Lakes Calendar by Chuck Zentmeyer

Shipping season start dates in recent years were March 15th (2023), March 18th (2022), March 19th (2021), March 15th (2020) and April 5th (2019).

“The opening of shipping season varies from year-to-year, sometimes by as much as 30 days,” explained Dean Haen, Director of the Port of Green Bay. “Factors that affect the shipping season include the weather, ice cover on the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway, and water conditions in other parts of the Great Lakes.”

Register your official guess for the arrival of the first ship HERE. One entry per person is allowed. If there are multiple correct guesses, the person who submitted their entry first will be chosen as the winner.
