Should You Have Your Tax Return Notarized?

Posted on 2-22-2023

This is a question that comes up every year as businesses and individuals are in the midst of finalizing their tax returns.

They’re almost ready to send everything off to the IRS, and then the question: Should I have my return notarized before I send it in?

While there are certain situations in which you may need to provide a notarized copy of your tax return (when applying for college financial aid, for example), you should not have your original tax return form notarized prior to submitting it to the IRS or to your state.

If, for any reason the IRS or your state needs to have you submit a notarized copy of your return — or a notarized letter attesting to your identity — you will be notified and instructed as to how to comply with the request.
